What they do
Smart thermostats connect to Wi-Fi so you can adjust temperatures remotely, and many learn your schedule or use occupancy sensing. ENERGY STAR certifies smart thermostats that meet its requirements for verified energy savings.
Compatibility checklist
- Many models require a common (C) wire for continuous power.
- Heat pumps, multi-stage systems and dual-fuel systems need a thermostat that supports them.
- Line-voltage (baseboard) heaters need specific models.
- If you're unsure, a contractor can confirm wiring and configure staging correctly.
