Where to look for current utility, state and federal incentives — and why to check before you buy.

Incentives change often
Federal, state and utility incentives for heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment change frequently. Under 2025 federal legislation, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (IRC Section 25C) does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Confirm the current rules on IRS.gov or with a tax professional before relying on any federal credit.
Where to look
- Your electric and gas utilities — many offer rebates for heat pumps, smart thermostats and tune-ups.
- Your state energy office, which administers state programs and any federally funded home energy rebates in your state.
- DSIRE, a database of state incentives for efficiency and renewables maintained by the N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center.
- ENERGY STAR's rebate finder for certified products.
Tips
- Ask contractors whether they are approved for your utility's rebate programs — some require participating installers.
- Keep invoices showing model numbers and efficiency ratings.
- Check whether a rebate must be reserved before installation.
