HVAC Contractor Licensing: What Varies by State
Why licensing rules differ, what to check, and how to verify a contractor before hiring.

There is no single national HVAC license
HVAC contractor licensing is regulated by states, and some states delegate licensing to cities or counties. Requirements can include experience, exams, insurance and bonding, and may differ for mechanical, refrigeration and fuel-gas work. Federal EPA Section 608 certification is separate and applies nationwide to refrigerant handling.
How to verify a contractor
- Ask for the contractor's license number and the issuing authority.
- Look it up on the issuing state or local board's online license search.
- Check the license status (active, expired, suspended) and the classification matches your job.
- Ask whether your job needs a permit and who will pull it.
How this directory handles licensing
We show a “License verified” badge only after confirming a current license record with the issuing authority, and we record the date of that check. Listings without that record are shown as “License not verified” — which does not mean the business is unlicensed.
