How to Choose an HVAC Contractor

A practical checklist for comparing contractors, estimates and warranties.

Last reviewed · 5 min read

Before you call

  • Know your equipment's model numbers and age if you can find them.
  • Note comfort problems: rooms that are too hot or cold, humidity issues, noise.
  • Decide whether you're open to replacing equipment or only want repairs.

Vetting contractors

  • Verify the license with your state licensing authority — requirements differ by state and sometimes by city or county.
  • Ask for proof of liability insurance and, where required, workers' compensation coverage.
  • Ask whether technicians who handle refrigerant hold EPA Section 608 certification (required by federal law).
  • Ask for references from recent jobs similar to yours.

Comparing estimates

  • Get written estimates from more than one contractor.
  • Make sure each estimate specifies equipment model, efficiency rating, scope of work, permits and cleanup.
  • Be cautious of quotes given without inspecting your home or doing a load calculation for replacements.
  • Compare warranty terms for both equipment and labor.
