Who needs it

Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified by an EPA-approved certifying organization.

Certification types

  • Type I — servicing small appliances.
  • Type II — servicing or disposing of high- or very high-pressure appliances (except small appliances and motor vehicle air conditioning).
  • Type III — servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances.
  • Universal — all of the above.

How to get certified

Technicians pass a proctored exam offered by an EPA-approved certifying organization. EPA publishes the list of approved organizations. Section 608 certification does not expire, but state and local contractor licenses are separate requirements.
